‘Mandatory credit check (BKR) by online casinos doesn’t make sense’

Since the introduction of the Remote Gambling Act (KOA) in April 2021 and the actual legalization of online gambling on October 1 of that year, alarming stories about increased gambling addiction have regularly appeared. These messages are often accompanied by poignant examples of – usually young men – who have gambled away a fortune in a short time. Last week, for example, we read how a Belgian grandfather took online gambling providers to court because his grandson lost almost half a million of his grandfather’s pension.

A gambling addiction is terrible and the stories are terrible, but they are isolated examples that do not do justice to the much broader reality. The stories that emerge in the media only reflect the extremes. They are excesses.
